Belles & Whistles

Hi Jaymie & Kelli! Just curious... When writing songs, do you usually start with the melody or the lyrics first?

I would say that it works both ways. I keep journals of all types of lyrics, written when I was in a particular mood or emotion. Then working off of words, I organize them in a way that works well with a melody. Sometimes a melody will come first, or a chord progression that I feel creates a strong feeling, and then I will look thru my journals to find pieces that fit the emotion of the music. In the end, I think they kind of both have to happen at the same time to make a song connect on a lyrical and a musical level - both have to connect to that same emotion.
Thank you for your question!
